Ben Gardane (Tunisie): une ville frontalière vulnérable

Taher Dhif Allah

Abstract

This article focuses on the vulnerable economic situation of the border town of Ben Gardane and the role of the state since independence. This city, is living on informal trading and smuggling for decades. It has suffered from political conflicts between Libya and Tunisia since the 1980s, given its location on the Tunisian-Libyan border. In addition, the new geopolitical context has worsened its marginal situation due to the terrorist attacks in the month of March 2016. This socio-economic crisis has led the unemployed young people of the city of Ben Gardane to organize protests in downtown against the State. A large number of these young people are looking for other employment opportunities, including emigration to Italy and then to other European countries to improve their standard of living.
