Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to compare and study forgiveness, marital satisfaction, and concern with marital affairs among Tehrani and non-Tehrani couples. This causal-comparative study is an applied research which uses a descriptive method. The statistical population is comprised of Tehrani and non-Tehrani couples residing in the city of Tehran. Using convenient sampling method, 268 individuals (including 134 couples i.e. 67 Tehrani and 67 non-Tehrani couples) have been randomly selected as sample members. In order to assess the characteristics of marriage and marital satisfaction the Rosen-Grandon (1998) Characteristics of Marriage Inventory questionnaire has been used. Also in order to assess the extent of forgiveness the (FFS) Family Forgiveness Scale has been employed. In order to measure the reliability of questionnaires, Cronbach’s Alpha has been used. The subscale of importance of marriage characteristics with 0.859, the subscale of marital satisfaction with 0.759, and the subscale of forgiveness with 0.707 Alpha coefficients all demonstrate the desired level of reliability. With the help of SPSS software, in order to analyze the data, descriptive statistics including mean and standard deviation as well as t-test to assess the significance of the mean values have been used. Also to determine the relationship between the study variables, the Pearson’s correlation test has been employed. The results suggest that the two groups have a significant difference in terms of the importance of marriage characteristics. No significant difference is observed in the scale of marital satisfaction; however the mean score of Tehran’s non-native resident couples is higher than that of Tehrani couples. The mean score of forgiveness by non-native couples in Tehran is higher than that of Tehrani couples and there is a significant difference between the two groups in this regard. Also the mean scores of non-Tehrani couples in all subscales of importance of marriage characteristics i.e. love, loyalty, and shared values are higher than those of Tehrani couples; hence the two groups have significant differences in those regards. The mean scores obtained by non-Tehrani couples in all subscales of marital satisfaction are higher than those of Tehrani couples; hence the two groups have significant differences in terms of marital satisfaction. However, the two groups demonstrate no significant difference in terms of satisfaction with love, loyalty, and shared family values.
